Since Mac Miller’s death last September, little information has surfaced about his catalog of unreleased music. While we still don’t know if a posthumous album will be released, Thelonious Martin did reveal that Mac had at least one project recorded. In an interview with DJBooth, he said that Mac has an album with producer Madlib that he never put out.
Born Malcolm McCormick, Miller first used the alias 'Easy Mac,' a name referenced on his debut mixtape, 2007's But My Mackin' Ain't Easy. Mixtape became his breakthrough when it was released in August of 2010, earning plenty of attention from hip-hop blogs and landing Miller a recording contract with Rostrum Records. Aug 13, 2020 Exactly 10 years after the release of Mac Miller's K.I.D.S. (Kickin' Incredibly Dope Shit) on Aug. 13, 2010, the folks at Rostrum Records (the label Mac was signed to) have unloaded a special 10th.
“He had this Madlib album, called Maclib,” Martin said. “I opened for Madlib in Chicago last summer, at Pitchfork. So I’m opening for Madlib, and about 15, 20 minutes left in my set, Madlib pulls up. Pete Rock walks up as well. So I’m trying to focus and DJ, and Madlib gets on and 15 minutes into his set he just randomly plays a Mac Miller joint. And I turn to him, I’m like, ‘There’s more of these, right?’ He’s said, ‘Oh, yeah, there’s a whole album. Maclib.’ What! What! He just kept moving on with his DJ set. If Madlib decides to bless the world with that project, he should.”
Miller and Madlib have just one previously released collaboration—2014’s “Piñata”with Freddie Gibbs—but it seems they have far more material in the vault.
Martin explained that overall, he wouldn’t want Mac’s material released without the rapper there to oversee it. “I feel like, an album is such a personal conversation to have and the person’s not there to sign off on it,” he said. “He had a ton of music that was completely different from what the public would get… I don’t like posthumous albums, I don’t.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Martin revealed that Mac’s 2018 album, Swimming, was originally called Guidelines.
“[It] was the title of the track we had put out at the time,” he said. “Initially, that was the title track. We were having these long conversations about putting together an album, cause I’m telling him about how I’m putting together mine. We’re going back and forth about how to touch an audience, how to make an audio world.”
“Guidelines” dropped on August 20, 2018, the final Mac Miller song released during the rapper’s lifetime.

Coming on the scene with a throwback style that betrayed his years, Pittsburgh-based rapper Mac Miller had just turned 18 when he spent 2010 making his name through mixtapes and video-sharing websites. Born Malcolm McCormick, Miller first used the alias 'Easy Mac,' a name referenced on his debut mixtape, 2007's But My Mackin' Ain't Easy. His K.I.D.S. mixtape became his breakthrough when it was released in August of 2010, earning plenty of attention from hip-hop blogs and landing Miller a recording contract with Rostrum Records. Rostrum released his debut EP, On and on and Beyond, and his debut album, Blue Slide Park, in 2011. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The more experimental effort Watching Movies with the Sound Off followed in 2013, with left-field hip-hop names like Action Bronson, Earl Sweatshirt, and Flying Lotus lending a hand. A year later he signed with Warner Bros. and launched his own imprint, REMember Music, under the major label. GO:OD AM followed in 2015 with Lil B, Chief Keef, and Miguel on the album's guest list. Just a year after GO:OD AM ascended to the Top Five of the Billboard 200 and Rap charts, Miller returned with his fourth LP, The Divine Feminine. The album featured contributions from guests like Kendrick Lamar, Cee Lo Green, Robert Glasper, and Anderson.Paak, who lent his soulful rasp to first single 'Dang!'
